Ingredients

  • 1 large egg 1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour ½ cup milk 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons butter (unsalted) 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup confectioner’s sugar 2 tablespoons California almonds (ground) ¼ cup California almond 6 ounces chocolate (semi-sweet) The following equipment are also needed: Pizzelle maker Pastry brush Cone-shaped pizzelle mold

Method

  1. 1. Prepare a bowl and start mixing the sugar, salt, almonds and flour in it. The eggs, vanilla, milk and about two tablespoons of the melted butter are then added. Mix everything well to produce a batter.2. After covering the bowl, store the mixture in your refrigerator to chill it for one up to twenty-four hours. Start heating the pizzelle maker. Brush the bottom and top part of the pizzelle mold using two tablespoons of flour and the melted butter.3. Pour about one tablespoon of the batter into the mold and then cover it. Cook it for two minutes.4. Peel a pizzelle right away and then wrap it around a cone mold. You should close its tip immediately. Hold the cone for fifteen minutes or until it becomes hard enough.5. Remove the molds and continue doing the process until you produce around twenty cones. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate in your microwave.6. Work in placing thick layers of the chocolate within each pizzelle. Sprinkle almonds on top of them and let them cool. You will know that this recipe is already ready for serving if the chocolate hardens up.

Raita

I was first introduced to Indian cuisine by my dear friend Meena. She is from India and when we first became friends she invited us over for dinner. She cooked the most amazing Indian dishes for us! I loved all the flavors, but since we are not used to eating a lot of spicy foods (some people in our family think ketchup is spicy), our mouths were on fire! Luckily, Meena also makes amazing Raita and she told us that you can use the cold, creamy sauce to cool things down a bit. Now, we eat enough Indian food that we have developed more of a tolerance to spice, but we still like to order a side of Raita because it is so yummy!


Recipe Challenge and New Online Hub for Kids and Families

Healthy living is about choosing healthy options in our day-to-day activities, including what we choose to eat. Learning how to make healthy eating choices at a young age can go a long way toward developing healthy habits and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

On Tuesday, April 4th, the Government of Canada, along with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and Corus Entertainment launched the Kid Food Nation National Recipe Challenge and Kid Food Nation online hub at the Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club in Toronto.

The National Recipe Challenge invites children aged 7 to 12 from across Canada to submit an original healthy and nutritious recipe. A diverse panel of Canadians will select the top 26 recipes based on nutrition, taste and cultural diversity. Two winning recipes will be chosen from each province and territory, and winners will be split equally by gender (13 girls and 13 boys). Winners will have the chance to celebrate Canada’s culinary heritage at the Kid Food Nation gala event in Ottawa featuring regional dishes from across the country.

The newly launched online hub includes resources on healthy eating and meal preparation, and complements the Kid Food Nation program being delivered at Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada. The hub features online videos and on-air segments with TV hosts and celebrity chefs, local talent, and experts as well as a parents-focused section. Kids will also be able to earn points through mini-games and quizzes, print shopping lists, and track their favourite recipes.

Scallion Noodles (上海蔥油拌麵)

Instructions

For the Scallion Oil (蔥油), pat the scallions dry (this will help with making sure oil doesn't spurt up when you're cooking).

Add the soy sauces with sugar, and set aside.

Pour the neutral oil into a pot and keep at medium-low heat

Fry the white scallion parts with the ginger. Once it starts to come close to being completely brown, take out of the pot and onto a separate plate. Remove ginger pieces.

Fry the green scallion parts until close to being brown. Add the fried white scallion back into the pot. Turn off the heat.

Add soy sauce mixture into the oil. It will bubble and cook. Let the scallion oil cool and store in a jar.

For Scallion Noodles (final assembly), boil water in a separate pot and toss noodles to cook

Once the noodles are done (you can generally tell if it's soft and has a slight bite), take them out of the pot and place into bowl

Add about two tablespoons of scallion oil to noodles and mix. Note: I add the soy sauce part of the oil to get some color onto the noodles.

Top the noodles with some scallions pieces from the scallion oil, and serve

Here’s how to make the restaurant’s Cajun jambalaya pasta for two.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces olive oil
  • 1 lb. boneless/skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 Tbls. Cajun spice blend
  • 4 oz. red, yellow, green peppers, cut into thin strips
  • 4 oz. red onions, cut into thin strips
  • 6 oz. shrimp (shells, tails and veins removed)
  • 1 Tbl. blanched garlic, minced
  • 2 tsps. Cajun spice blend
  • ½ tsp. kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp. ground black pepper
  • 4 oz. roma tomatoes, diced in 1-inch pieces
  • 1½ cups spicy chicken-seafood broth
  • 1 Tbl. chopped parsley
  • 1 lb. linguini pasta (fresh)
  1. Heat the olive oil in a large sauté pan. Place the chicken into a clean mixing bowl. Sprinkle the Cajun spice over the chicken and into the bowl. Gently toss the chicken until each piece is evenly coated with the spice.
  2. Add the chicken into the sauté pan and cook until it is about half done. Add the peppers, onions and shrimp into the pan. Cook until the shrimp are about half done. Add the garlic into the pan. Season all of the ingredients with kosher salt, ground black pepper and a little more Cajun spice.
  3. Add the diced tomatoes and chicken-seafood broth into the sauté pan. Gently stir the ingredients together. Continue to cook until the chicken and shrimp are done and the vegetables are tender.
  4. Drop the pasta into boiling salted water, and cook until al dente.
  5. Place the pasta into serving bowls. Spoon the jambalaya over the pasta. Garnish with a sprinkle of freshly chopped parsley.

Set the default recipe¶

When a new recipe is inserted (or old one updated) this trigger ensures the default_print_style_recipes table updated to with the latest revised recipe. This also ensures that a recipe is not overwritten if it is currently in use by one or more books (aka Collections).

Prevent deletion of used recipes¶

Prevents deletion of recipes in the print_style_recipes table if the recipe is in use (therefore is a recipe that has been used in baking book). If the recipe being deleted is in default_print_style_recipes it will be replaced with the next newest available recipe.
